Wilmoth blamed Scannell’s death on area ranchers who hired alien laborers for lower wages. “They have been aggravating the Mexicans by telling them the officers are not giving them a square deal,” he declared. Dorothy Scannell later wrote a letter to her husband’s former colleagues. “I hope you will all always uphold the standard and never put a poor officer in the organization,” she told them. “I am going to try to teach our boy to be as big, capable, dependable, and good as his daddy, and when he grows up, if he wishes to take Myles’ place in the service I shall willingly give my consent.” Scannell was the twelfth Border Patrol officer to die in the line of duty and the first killed because of “immigration trouble.” “Usually there has been a smuggling or liquor angle,” Wilmoth told reporters. His assailants were never apprehended.25
